Career-Boosting Lessons from Lee Iacocca

I can almost hear you thinking, “Who’s this Lee Iacocca? And what are these career-boosting lessons I can learn from him?”

Great questions. Allow me to elaborate on why, as a continuous improvement coach, I use Iacocca’s career-saving ideas to help smart professionals— like you— escape the competition of the job market.

Ready? Feel free to grab a pen and notepad. (You might want to take some notes.)

Lido Anthony “Lee” Iacocca

  • Was an exceptional automobile executive.
  • Presided over Chrysler and Ford Motor. In fact, he was the first CEO to lead 2 of the 3 big automakers in the 1970s.
  • Was the mastermind behind the Ford Mustang and the Pinto cars.

But that’s not all. Lee Iacocca also

Long story short, the man was a great business leader and changed the automobile industry for the better. I think you’ll agree with me when I say there are plenty of career-boosting lessons we can learn from Iacocca.

2 Lessons from Iacocca that Will Boost Your Career

In my coaching work, I usually cover 10 Iacocca’s principles with my clients. Here are two of them:

#1- “In times of great stress or adversity, it’s always best to keep busy, to plow your anger and your energy into something positive.”

Put differently, using your personal energy to do work that matters, even in times of adversity, will set you apart from the crowd—or from your whining and entitled colleagues.

#2- “Any supervisor worth his salt would rather deal with people who attempt too much than with those who try too little.”

To put it bluntly, “Are you doing too much or too little for your boss?” See, the old saying “you get what you pay for” should never influence your career decisions.

Basically, to use the words of the famous American entrepreneur Jim Rohn:

“You don’t get paid for the hour. You get paid for the value you bring to the hour.”

So, plow through the obstacles in your way and continue bringing value to your workplace—and to your boss!
